Health and safety awareness is the
responsibility of every student, visitor and
employee.
Living in a communal lifestyle can have
its own hazards.Whilst living in student
accommodation you are expected to help
maintain a safe living environment. Breaking
Health and Safety regulations is a very serious
matter,which could lead to disciplinary action
being taken against you.Youmust take
responsibility for your actions and you need to
consider not only your ownHealth and Safety,
but also the Health and Safety of others.
Please report any potential hazards to any
member of The Student VillageTeam
immediately. Please note that staff will carry
out weekly Health and Safety checks in
communal areas of flats.
The following list gives examples of the type
of behaviour that constitute a breach inHealth
and Safety regulations.This list is provided
as a guide and is not an exhaustive list.
•Misuse of a fire alarm.
•Misuse of fire fighting equipment, such as
fire extinguishers.
•Use of electrical adapters not supplied by
the University.
•Damage toor the removal of door andwindow
closers – especially those on Fire doors.
• Failure to evacuatewhen the fire alarm
sounds (Subject to fire safety evacuation
procedures) or returning to the building
before permission has been given.
•Propping open of fire doors – any door with
a self-closingmechanism or an appropriate
sign on is a Fire door.
•Removing or defacing notices relating to
Health and Safety.
•Blocking corridors, stairways or fire exits
with equipment or stores.
•Allowing a room or a flat to become so
unhygienic that it may cause a risk to health.
• Storage of flammablematerials is not
allowed e.g. petrol, solvents, and fireworks.
•Causing a fire alarm activation due to non
attendance of foodwhilst cooking.
•Dryingwet clothes in your roomwill
encourage damp.You should use the laundry
towash and dry clothes.
• In the interests of safety, no objects of any
kind should be thrown out of anywindow.
Students known to have thrown an object
out of awindowwill be subject to disciplinary
procedures andmay be required to leave
student accommodation.
•Windows, particularly in high-rise buildings,
must be kept on their safety catches at all
times.All windows should be securedwhen
you leave your study bedroom unattended for
however short a period.
•With reference to the Conditions of
Residence and Licence, anyweapon or
itemdeemeddangerous or offensive is not
permitted andwill be confiscated. In addition,
items such as candles,which constitute a fire
hazard,will be removed.
• Posters etc. should only be displayed on
the notice board provided in study bedrooms
andnot on any other surface as thiswill result
in damage towalls.The kitchen and corridor
must be kept clear of posters, as they are
a fire hazard.Therewill be charges for any
damage caused to thewalls or paintwork.
• In the interests of safety, no other furniture
or curtains are permitted in the residences,
and the furniture and fittings providedmust
not be removed.
•Chip pans and laser pens are not permitted
within student accommodation.
Any student breachingHealth and Safety
regulationswill have to pay the full cost
to repair and/or replace any damaged safety
equipment.
Caution –Disciplinary/damage costs can be
expensive.

students is the fountain area
outside theMain Building.
